HOSPITALS.

4th. The structure of the buildings, including adaptations to climate and arrangements for ventilation, coolness, and warmth. Baths.

Civil Hospital. There is nothing peculiar in the structure of the Hospital - not having been built for the purpose. It is simply a two-storied quadrilateral house, having verandahs on its north and south sides. All that was done to adapt it to its present purpose was to knock down partitions, so as to allow a free draught of air through the wards, and to erect large ventilators in the roof. This has been found to answer admirably, and we have never been required to do more, even in the hottest season. Up to the present time, we have been without any arrangement for baths, hot or cold, beyond what could be carried by Coolies. I anticipate, however, that now water has been introduced into the enclosure, this subject will not be forgotten.

The plans of this building, as well as that of the Lock Hospital, accompany this and give the necessary information.
